MORE ABOUT KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Garner’s Class

I.                   Discipline

So that our classroom environment will be one where all children will be safe, grow, learn, and care

about themselves and others, WE have five basic rules of behavior listed here:

1.       We walk.

2.       Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

3.       Raise your hand.

4.       Look, listen, and follow directions the first time.

5.       Remember your manners.

II.                Positive Reinforcement

Throughout the day I will always strive to give the children as much positive feedback and reinforcement as possible.  With a smile, wink, a thank you, or a kind word, I’ll let them know that they are doing the right thing.  We will talk often about helping others and remembering our manners!

III.             Consequences

When a rule or procedure is not followed:

1st time = verbal warning one from adult

2nd time = verbal warning two from adult and child’s clothespin is moved to the stop sign picture

3rd time = verbal warning three from adult and child’s clothespin is moved to the time out picture and the child is separated from the class for a short amount of time

4th time = misbehavior stated, child’s clothespin is moved to the telephone picture – teacher and child telephone parent at work or home and the child explains to the parent what has happened;  a behavior slip from the office may also be given to the principal depending on the amount of misbehavior and/or severity

**PLEASE NOTE:  Consequences are subject to change for a particular child if inappropriate behavior continues and the above consequences do not seem effective.  This will include continuous communication with parents and visit(s) with the principal.

IV.             “Give Me Five”

We will use this saying to help get a large group of children focused quickly.  The adult will raise his/her hand and say, “Give me five!”.  The children are to then get quiet, raise their hands and get ready to listen.  The five fingers represent the needed behavior at that time:

*Eyes Looking

 *Ears Listening

    *Mouth Quiet

 *Hands Resting

   *Facing Forward

V.                Donegal School District “Code of Behavior” AND School Pledge

The Donegal School District has established a basic code of behavior.  We will discuss them and learn about them in class.  The school pledge will always follow The Pledge of Allegiance each morning.

We will talk about “the person” that really makes the final decision on how we choose to act/behave is NOT mom, dad, teacher…it’s YOU (the student)!  WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN BEHAVIOR CHOICES (at home, school, stores, church, etc.).  There are no excuses.  This is a learning process, of course. J  Your support and encouragement is always very much needed and appreciated!

VII.     Recess

We will go outside everyday for play time and time to socialize.  Recess is an important part of a child’s day for many reasons.  Many life skills are acquired on the playground.  Please be sure that your child dresses appropriately for outside playtime and for the weather.

SUGGESTIONS FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD…

Be positive.  Encourage your child in everything he/she attempts.  Motivation, not criticism is

    key to success.

Be a good listener.  As an adult, really listen to what your child is saying.

Encourage responsibility!  If your child fails to carry out any reasonably assigned task, he/she

must be willing to accept appropriate consequences.

Establish routines!  Help your child develop life-long study habits.  Set aside a certain place and time for quiet time for reading and other quiet projects when/where he/she can really focus and concentrate.

Try to spend some time alone with your child everyday.  Remember quality time is often more beneficial than the quantity.

     PLAY is a child’s work!

Slow down and enjoy your children!  J
